How to criticize China
photo
Confucius said: "In a group of three people, one of them will become my teacher". Chinese are eager to learn from outside. However, criticism is an art as well. Improper manner, irresponsible comments and misunderstanding do not contribute to anything, but only hurt other people and increase prejudice. How to criticize China, a country with very different history and culture from the West? This question becomes more urgent and important as China comes back to the global stage. Your insights are sincerely welcome.

As a Chinese living in US, I think the author know what he's talking about. Mutual understanding is very important. If things go the way some individuals wanted to be, where is the possiblity of co-exist in culture and tradition.
An ancient Chinese verb: Keep going by seeking common ground while reserve difference. As you go along, you will understand each other better, and find more commons and less difference.

Another thing comes to my mind is that, some people just wants something comes out from his mind/mouth and does not care the result, while others care more about the consequence by choosing the best(usually slower and more painful) approach. You have the full right to choose your approach.

I would change it to “Understanding another world: How to Communicate with
China”. The reason being, first, the critics might not want to admit that
they are criticizing China, and they will say that they are merely pointing
out the facts.

Secondly, the criticized might see it with caution as well. I for one don’
t like to be criticized, but I am definitely open to constructive
suggestions.

Well I have just read the article Understanding another world: How, to criticize China. I counted 8 insults toward me and my people. It said that I was narrow minded, stupid, a trouble maker, ignorant twice, guilebull, and not worth talking to. It seems that in your eyes and the eyes of the articles writer that I must understand you while you should not consider me and insult me as you wish. Never was there a mention of a hope of you understanding my culture only the demand that I understand you finished of with a veiled threat of internment into a re-education camp. This I take as the grossest insult. I do understand the hypocrisy with which the U.S government use the human rights card. Sprouting human rights while hampering efforts to implement labour reform bills in China. I also understand the hypocrisy in which the Chinese government use a “harmonious world.” Guns for oil in the Sudan, with genocide happening in Dafur. Guns dispatched to Zimbarbwe as soon as trouble begins. Even the honourless U.S. government won’t put a loaded gun into trouble spots like that. And they have no honour at all, NONE. Once again you have said that I MUST change and suit you yet you refuse to attempt to understand me. You will say I am blunt. My culture is. The article claims that the Chinese government is benign, pragmatic and thoroughly insightful with nothing but the very best interests of that people at heart. But the Mongolians, the Uighurs and the Tibetans are being migrated into a minority in their own land while the Chinese government are locking them out of the political system and limiting their access to the economic system and governing their religious beliefs although I can not say this because you don’t like to be criticised. I don’t like to be insulted but all I get from Chinese if I don’t see it all their way. I have tried the correct method of approach to comment on the Chinese but unless I give them a rightwing comment that aligns with theirs they give me the same you are an uneducated stupid westerner who does not understand the Chinese and therefore are not worth listening to. But the insults were far worse than that. At the end of the day it still came down to from them "I don’t like what you say no matter how you say it". I have spent a lot of time in the company of Chinese people over that last 5 years, since I will be marrying my girlfriend who is Chinese. Although she grew up in a rural area so she is more western but she still understands Chinese. She to sees the hypocrisy with which the Chinese use the “you don’t understand me” and I am sick of the double standards . I want you to stop “West Bashing” but then that’s not the Chinese culture is it. I must not understand you because you are not west bashing are you. You are giving me a completely un biased and thoroughly researched appraisal of with addition of just a few short comings in some of my processes aren’t you. Yes that’s right. So when you all got out there and insulted me collectively where exactly were your honest and thoughtful and constructive comments when you called me and all my people stupid liars because in my ignorance of your superior culture I missed it. YOU ARE THE JOKE and a racist. You see what I mean mate.
Practice what you preach. Listen! for the past 8 years at least the Chinese press has given nothing but westerners are bias against China. I can't qualify for the U.S., not living there, but I know they have a notoriously introverted society and press. No one gets a fair run there. But here in Australia and England and most of Europe we have given China an honest hand in our press and Chinese press has ran a propaganda war against us, Europe and the U.S. with claims of bias and exaggeration. Where were the Chinese press reports when all of you Harmonious world loving citizens showed up in Canberra and assulted peaceful citizens wanting to have their rightful peacefull say. I call that BIAS what do you call it. Where are you words now.

With a response of HaHa. It does show the real level that the webmater is at The ret i not worth effort. I don't see any point in talking with China. I am in support of complete trade blockade by the west of china. Who do you trade with then. The Wests billion of dollars in foreign investment and trade bought you properity. The West in the guise of the UN (a Western organisation) lured your government out into the rest of the world after your government bigget achievement was to slaughter 80 million of it's own people. We then try to help you open up the chinese system so it's people are able to scutinise it's behaviour in the hope that you can put in place safe gaurds against your government doing what it again. 1976 was not long ago. ALL those who run China were involved in cultural revelutions implimentation. They all have blood on their hands. It CAN repeat because no one in China will address it and examine it. Whiler all the young ones can do is say ra ra to an economic properity that has more to do with international economies than internal policy. Although the work the Chinese government has done in lifting the lowest paid is amazing and really should be commended. But they still support multinational franchise before the people of China. More so than India. Although India has fallen on the social policy side and still has grinding poverty but a much stronger economy than China. Ad all you can do as the next generation of leaders is insult the people who have done the most to help you to where you are now. After seeing how your citizen behaved in Canberra I guess thugery is all you can expect from Chinese Communit party bullies. GOOD BYE and I'll catch you after the next cultural revelution which ill kick in in three years time. And after reading the veiled threat of torture in a re-education camp and your trupeting of the digusting author I won't be sad when history reapets and it will becaue you do not have the guts to do any thing yeah go ahead and inult me BUT I kno that I amd safe from your future enjoy. GOOD BYE

“China isn't a country - it's a different world” - great quote from Lonely Planet, which has been my bible.
¨政治家绝大部分都是功利的. 但普通记者, 许多民间团体和独立评论家至少是带着理想¨ - totally agree!

The fact is many countries are so different from each other, but I think the western world believes that there is a basic way that human beings should be treated.

I think the reaction of the chinese government to the earthquake recently has shown the world that chinese lives don´t worth any less than american lives. But should Chinese be treated any less than the Americans? Less dignity, less freedom, and less human rights? That´s a question for us to answer.
(You might think that we don´t have less dignity or freedom or human rights, but that´s because you are not the groups that are suppressed)

Crippled Rider Your comment on the earth quake is very interesting. You seem to feel that it shows in some undefined way that the Chinese Communist Party has any care or empathy for the Chinese people. Earth quakes DO NOT happen with out any warning. Ask anyone who lives in LA. The Chinese Communist Party DID NOT give out the warnings. Research earth quakes a little. Modern seismology is very advanced and can detect the slightest tremor. The Chinese government for reasons that are impossible for me to guess at decided NOT to warn the people of Sichuan. 80,000 thousand people died because the Chinese Government refused to pass on the warnings that where handed to them. Look up the most recent earth quakes in LA, only 20 people died because the government gave out the warnings. The recent typhoon that hit the coast of China had only a handful of people die because they had to pass on the warnings, since Taiwan had already prepared and it could not be embarrassed by a country it wants to own. Conspiring to murder 80,000 people makes you think your government cares for its people. I am glad I live in a country that really does have a government that cares.
